So the US Open started today, if you haven't noticed. Day 1 produced no notable upsets, but it was full of a lot of exciting tennis. Some interesting points of note
- The Americans had an up and down day. Jack Sock put in a great perofrmance, defeating seeded Florian Mayer in straight sets when Mayer retired in the third. Fish took care of Go Soeda, and James Blake defeated Lukas Lacko in four. Vavara Lepchenko pulled out a tight one, winning 7-5 in the third. On the down side, Donald Young got crushed by Roger Federer, Jamie Hampton lost to Marion Bartoli. and Melanie Oudin got smoked. Michael Russell also lost a hearbreaker in the fifth after being up two sets to one.
- The top women all looked excellent. Azarenka, Sharapova, Stosur, Kvitova, and Li all won handily. Kim Clijsters also started her farewell tour in style, beating the youngster Duval very easily. This should be a great tournament on the women's side, but to get there we have to go through some stinkers. It'll be worth it though.
- Not much else of note happened. It'll only get better from here. We'll have a preview up tomorrow morning of what to watch.
